Veteran Olympic curler Debbie McCormick of Rio, Wisconsin scored 4 points in the seventh end to lead her team to the A Event championship of the 4th Annual Midland Open Bonspiel last weekend.  Curling with McCormick were Robert Sandoval and Marc Palmeri from the Chicago Curling Club, and Cary Brubaker from the Midland Curling Club.  They defeated Midland’s Scott Strouse rink in the Sunday morning finals.  Aaron Carlson, Matt Whaley, and Pete Waters rounded out the Strouse team.  It was a close game through six ends with each team scoring with the hammer.  Strouse conceded after McCormick’s big score in the seventh end.

“Curling with Debbie McCormick was a real thrill,” stated Cary Brubaker, a late substitution to the team. “My parents came to town and saw me curl for the first time.  We won the bonspiel.  Debbie is a wonderful curler and so much fun to be with.”

The B event winner was Mark Curtis from Arkansas, curling with Pam Oleinik from Wisconsin, Scott and Laurie Rahn from Illinois. They defeated Mike Graves, the Midland Club’s Junior Curling coach, who curled with 3 Junior Women contenders: Maya Willertz, Madelyn Graves, and Delaney Strouse.

Former Midlander Chris Doremus and his son Nathan (age 9) returned from Texas to capture the C Event crown. They were supported by Dave Hinson and Ryan Quinn from Midland.  C Event runners up were Hugh and Joan McCarrel from Ontario, and Peter and Bonnie Dam of Midland.

In the A Consolation Event, Midland’s Michelle DeBuck rink came from behind to win an extra-end thriller. Curling with DeBuck were Amanda Vosberg and John Paul from Minnesota, and Sean Loughran from St. Louis.  They defeated the Sidney Schroeder rink who are 2-time GLCA Junior Women’s Champions.  Curling with Schroeder were her sister Allie Schroeder, Kayla Beauregard, and Clare Visconti.
